What is a fight camp in MMA
Length of a typical fight camp
Most professional fighters start a structured fight camp six to eight weeks before fight night. Some stay in shape all year and use camp only to peak, others use it to get back into top condition.
Main elements of a fight camp
- Technical training in striking and grappling
- Sparring sessions with different partners
- Strength and conditioning work
- Game plan and film study of the opponent
- Diet and weight management
The mental side
Fight camp is not only physical. Fighters also work on focus, confidence and stress management. Media obligations and travel can add extra pressure.
Why fans should care
Understanding what goes into a camp gives fans more respect for fighters and helps explain why short notice fights and injuries can change results dramatically.
