KO, TKO and Submission explained for new MMA fans
KO, TKO and Submission explained
If you are new to MMA, the three most common fight endings you will hear about are knockout, technical knockout and submission. They all end the fight, but in different ways.
What is a Knockout (KO)
A knockout happens when a strike makes a fighter lose consciousness. The referee immediately stops the fight. This is the clean highlight finish most fans know from clips and social media.
What is a Technical Knockout (TKO)
A technical knockout happens when a fighter can no longer defend themselves intelligently. They might still be conscious, but they are taking too much damage or are stuck in a bad position. The referee stops the fight to protect the fighter.
What is a Submission
A submission happens when a fighter gives up because of a choke or joint lock. They usually tap on the opponent or on the canvas to signal that they want the fight to stop. Sometimes the referee steps in when a fighter does not tap but is unconscious.
Why it matters
Understanding KO, TKO and submission makes it much easier to follow fight results, scorecards and statistics. It is also important for betting, because different fighters have different finishing styles.
