How UFC scoring works: the 10 point must system
How UFC scoring works
Most modern MMA promotions, including the UFC, use the 10 point must system. Every round is scored separately by three judges who sit cageside.
The basic idea
In every round, the winner must receive 10 points. The loser receives 9 points or less. Close rounds are usually 10 9, while dominant rounds can be 10 8 or even 10 7 in very rare cases.
What judges look at
- Effective striking and grappling
- Effective aggression
- Octagon control or cage control
Damage and real impact are more important than simple volume. One hard knockdown can be worth more than five light jabs.
Common score totals
After three rounds in a normal fight, judges add up the scores of all rounds. Common totals are 29 28, 30 27 or 29 27. In five round fights scores like 48 47 and 49 46 are common.
Why fans should know this
Understanding the scoring makes close decisions less confusing and helps you judge rounds yourself while watching live.
